The career oracle is a way of using the cabinet's games as writing prompts about work. It is not an assessment of an employer, an offer or your chances of success. A card can introduce a theme; the information you gather is what helps you evaluate a choice.
Start with a question you can investigate
- “Will I enjoy this role?” becomes “What would a normal working week involve?”
- “Am I ready for more responsibility?” becomes “Which tasks can I already do, and where would I need support?”
- “Should I accept another project?” becomes “What would need to move off my current list?”
Write the answer you already have and leave a visible blank where information is missing. A blank is useful: it tells you what to ask. An oracle response cannot fill it in.
A worked example: an unfamiliar role
Imagine a tarot-themed yes appears when you are considering applying for a role in a new field. Use that as a prompt to explore curiosity, not a prediction of an offer. Read the requirements, identify one transferable skill and one gap, and decide whether preparing an application is a reasonable use of your time. A no would not change the requirements or remove your skills.
A short worksheet
- Possibility: state the action you are considering.
- Known details: list the requirements, timing and commitments you have actually confirmed.
- Open questions: note the information you would need from the organisation.
- Small step: choose an enquiry, a draft or a conversation that helps you learn more.
- Decision: return to the details after that step, rather than collecting more readings.
Separate the theme from the choice
A phrase about change might suggest that you want variety. You can explore that in several ways: a different task, a learning project or a conversation about your current role. It does not necessarily mean leaving a job. Likewise, a phrase about patience does not require staying in a situation you have reasons to change.
For consequential work decisions, compare the actual terms and circumstances and seek relevant advice where needed. The longer or more dramatic ritual is not a more informed adviser.
